Warsaw destroyed start slideshow >

Warsaw was destroyed four times during the Second World War. The first destruction occurred from the bombardment of the capital in September 1939. After the fall of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in May 1943, the whole district was level with the ground. During the fights of the Warsaw Uprising in August and September 1944, the city was destroyed by German artillery gunfire, bombardment, and fires. And after its capitulation and civil evacuation in October 1944, even more buildings were blown up. Most of the photographs in the Museum’s collection are of the destruction during the Warsaw Uprising and the destroyed post-war city, although photographs of the rubble and ruins of the ghetto and from the 1939 bombardments are also found.
