Fires start slideshow >

The black and white photographs don’t convey in full how Warsaw must have looked, aglow with fires and under a pall of smoke. Those who survived the Uprising remember such scenes as terrifying and heartbreaking. An attempt to highlight these views was undertaken by Adam Tomiak, who coloured the photographs of his son, Edward, with red ink. Here, along with various shots of fires being extinguished in different parts of the city, the fire in the PAST (the Polish Telephone Joint-stock Company) building is well documented. This important point of German resistance was captured by the Polish insurgents on 20 August using various means, including using motorised pumps that pumped an oil and petrol mixture inside and then lit up.
