Tramway cars, immobilized trucks and even carts were all used to fortify the barricades. Cars, tanks and artillery vehicles were all valuable loot for the insurgents, even though it was difficult to move about in them along the narrow, barricaded streets. Hence the larger number of photographs of insurgents on motorbikes and bicycles, as opposed to behind the wheel. From above Warsaw German Junkers Ju 87 ‘Stuka’ bomber planes bombarded the town, while allied planes made airdrops for Polish insurgents. Also found in this collection are the post-war photographs of Ryszard Witkowski, which show the remains of an American heavy bomber Consolidated B-24 Liberator, shot over Miodowa Street in Old Town.
