Władysław Martyka was born 27 June 1914. He worked within the conspiracy from March 1940 in the III Wola District of the Warsaw Home Army (AK). In the Uprising, he joined the III ‘Konrad’ Group in Powiśle district. Martyka was killed on the first day of the fighting, outside of the Social Insurance office on Smulikowskiego Street.

• Martyka’s photographs include around 400 shots of occupied Warsaw. He photographed his friends and family in parks, squares and streets, creating a personal portrait of the occupied city. The imprint of war, seen in the destroyed buildings and the presence of the German army, was soothed by the façade of normal life.
